During my stay with Andrea in Cancun, Mexico in June, Andrea gave me one of the most impressive birthday gifts I have ever received. I have written about swimming with dolphins before in this blog, now I want to zoom in into that amazing experience.

The Dolphin Basin was close to our hotel (We could literally walk to it and it maintained by Delphinus. The company is well respected and has excellent trainers. The trainers speak Spanish and English.
We choose one of the cheaper package and our hotel was able to give us a 2 for 1 deal. Which was very good! Normally you would pay around 200 Dollar per person for the basic package, now we only had to pay 200 Dollar for 2 persons. An excellent deal! However once we arrived we could buy small add-ons (They really know how to squeeze every penny out of you). For 50 Dollars we choose to do a Dolphin Ride. Where you basically will put your arms around the fin of the Dolpin and he/she will pull you. Little did I know that when we are doing the actions with the Dolphin everyone did this. Meaning I was basically the only person who paid for this.

Before we met the dolphins, we got a short safety introduction and things we are absolutely not allowed to do (like putting our hands in front of the blowhole) and follow the instructions of the trainer at all times. After that we had to get our swimming vests and we got inside the pool.

The Dolphins were already swimming and we got introduced to our dolphin, we were a total of 6 people swimming with this particular dolphin. It took around 40 minutes in the water and we did a lot of moves with the dolphin, and took a lot of pictures. It was very special day and the dolphins finished with very amazing show.

After we were done we bought 2 pictures and a digital album together with an USB stick for around 100 euro.

(dutch, sorry!)

Volgende droom olifantje rijden?

The dolphins are born into captivity, so obviously they won't be dreaming of freedom. Also the company cares a lot about education, I ensure you the dolphins are a good life. Better than getting hunted and killed. We first need to take care of that before we actually try to set them free. As long as humans are horrible towards animals, a breeding program like Delphinus has will ensure we have Dolphins and other animals in the future.

They are being bred to entertain you, not to ensure their future. You took a dive in a prison.

Dolphins are NOT domesticated animals like horses. They will always remain caged wild animals and thus using them for entertainment is wrong. Morally wrong.
