Whenever I am flying, I like to pass the time as quickly as possible, especially on long haul flights, getting bored could come very fast, so below are some tips on how I deal with this.

1. Put some movies on a tablet/laptop
When I know I will fly within a month or two, I always start gathering movies and series I would like to watch on my laptop. If you have netflix on a mobile device like a tablet or a phone you can also just download the series you haven’t seen yet.

It also depends on the airline if they have good movies in their library on the entertainment system, so I use the above more as a plan B. Last time I put a game (Factorio) on my laptop and I spent over 4 hours playing in one go.

2. Buy a travelbook and read it
The first time I went to Mexico, I bought a Lonely planet book of Mexico. I started reading it a few weeks before the flight and marked down any interesting chapters. Basically you can finish the final touches on your holiday and spend less time looking for cool places when you are touching down.

3. Listen to a specific designed playlists/podcasts
Before flying, I always make sure I download enough songs (around 100), so I can always chill on some music. With Spotify you can also dowload podcasts, great to get some distraction when you’re flying.

Also I always make sure I have the essential documents offline on my phone and laptop. Just in case.

What about talking with the person sitting next to you?
Sure you can sit besides a silent person (occupied with headphones) but many people are willing for a chat.

Yeah, I always try to have a chat, but mostly I am sitting next to a person who doesn't care or doesn't speak English.

On my first flight to Mexico City, there was a Mexican Couple, we exchanged some great ideas on things to visit :)

Just give me a good book and I'll be quiet the entire flight. That reminds me that I still need to find one for my upcoming trip.

Kijk of je met een app als Pyphone dingen kan meten als acceleratie en luchtdruk, en of je tijdens de vlucht een redelijke inschatting van je hoogte, snelheid en locatie kan maken zonder gps.

I prefer a not so good night's sleep before I travel by plane.
That way I feel drowsy and after take off (sometimes during :X ), I fall asleep.
And since it's not like a bus or train, you don't have to be afraid you'll miss your stop :P

If I can't sleep, I see if the person next to me is up for a chat.
But most of the time, people are asleep (or pretend to be :+).
Or they are too introvert, staring only at their phones & tablets with headphones on...

Pensioners sometimes won't stop talking to you, which can be fun, unless they are boring or when you want to sleep :P

Whow. I'm not a introverted person, but chatting with me on a plane is a big no-no. Sure, the usual "Hello" and "How do you do", but I've got my games and movies and if you try to disturb that, you're an assh*le.

Depending on which direction i fly in, i generally just pop a sleeping pill.

I tire myself out the evening before, sleep as little as possible, go to the airport, board, pop a pill and wake up when i arrive.
For destinations like LA or Tokyo it saves 2 days of jetlag.

For destinations which are in close timezones, but still far away (like South Africa), i tend to just watch movies or study on Udemy (which i have downloaded on my phone), have a chat, play Factorio or Minecraft or edit some videos.

Closer flights (less than 5 hours) is usually chatting, some Udemy studying or work.
